Enjoy Stand Up Paddleboarding In The Protected Coves Of Makena
Makena Landing is a great place for both beginner and advanced Stand Up Paddle Boarders. Also known as SUP, Stand Up Paddle Boarding is one of the fastest growing ocean sports and is fun for the whole family. On Maui, Makena Landing offers one of the best places to launch your Stand Up Paddle Boarding adventure. The surrounding bay is generally calm and there is easy entry via a sandy boat ramp, making it an excellent place for beginner Stand Up Paddle Boarders. More advanced Stand Up Paddle Boarders will enjoy the ability to cruise down South Maui’s breathtaking coastline.
If seeing turtles is on the top of your vacation list, then this is definitely the place to be. Makena Landing is a popular starting point for accessing “Turtle Town”, a broad stretch of reef along South Maui that is known for its abundance of sea turtles. Conditions at Makena Landing are so perfect for watersports that many commercial Stand Up Paddle Boarding lessons and tours also operate out of the area. There are adjacent restrooms and showers, in addition to a parking lot. Early mornings offer the best conditions and fewest crowds.
The bay itself is large enough that beginner Stand Up Paddle Boarders can practice without feeling crowded. Sea turtles are also regularly spotted within the bay, particularly along the rocky coastline. More advanced Stand Up Paddle Boarders can head to the right towards the rocky point known as Nahuna Point. Nahuna Point is famed on Maui for is excellent snorkeling and diving. It is commonly referred to one of its many nicknames including “Five Caves”, “Five Graves”, “Turtle Town”, and “Turtle Arches”. Here you have an excellent chance of spotting green sea turtles, in addition to spotted eagle rays, manta rays, and sometimes even Hawaiian monk seals. The visibility is usually excellent and is often 50+ feet. Most of the turtles use this area as a resting place and will spend hours sleeping under the large rocks and ledges. Every so often they come to the surface to breath. If you spend a little time hanging out at Nahuna Point you are bound to see a turtle. Always remember, though, to give turtles ample space.
Advanced Stand Up Paddle Boarding can also be found by paddling left out of Makena Bay towards Puu Olai, a volcanic cinder cone that protrudes into the ocean. The coastline here is stunningly beautiful and often uncrowded. While it is possible to paddle from Makena Landing to Puu Olai, the round trip is over two miles. Maluaka Beach is closer and a great spot to relax on the beach before heading back to Makena Landing. Turtles also frequent this area so keep your eyes peeled.
